We picked the last of the Zinnias Sunday afternoon...right before the freeze.
I have a really hard time putting glass jars in the recycle bin. They are way too useful and come in great shapes and sizes.
My favorite solution for the cabinet full of glass jars...flowers.
You can share flowers with friends and they don't have to worry about returning the container. You don't have to buy a vase AND...you make more room in the cabinet.
Happiness all around.

If you find yourself in the mood for a little road trip this weekend, might I suggest the Folk Festival? The first weekend in October The John C. Campbell Folk School has their fall festival and it is fab-u-lous!
There is a great assortment of art and craft work for sale. AND...you can explore the campus and see craft demonstrations in the studios or see the cloggers and live music in the big barn.
Wingo usually has a booth at the festival but this year I'm going for a long weekend of fun.

Tonight is First Friday and the Flatiron Studio has a fantastic show in store for all of us! Celebrating the rich history of textiles in the south, the theme of the show is "threaded".

I made some new pieces for Art and Light inspired by weaves/textures/plaids. My dear friend Laurie made new/vintage collage story boxes for Knack. Our friend Kina has sweet modern crocheted goodies, Michelle has new jewelry AND new/vintage/cool tees and Kyle has new Famsters and paintings...and the list goes on and on.

There really are too many wonderful things to tell you about. You better just get yourself to the Pendleton Street Arts District tonight from 6-9 and Saturday from 10-3.

My new BEE-u-tee-FULL handmade book by Lisa Norris of Made By One Girl. The gold flower is a block print that she made and she painted the blue bird on the top. The inside covers are old maps and there is a mix of fun paper inside. LOVE IT!

AND...how about that painting from the Tree Ring series by Tracy Melton?! He cuts down the tree and saws it into slices, sands, paints and seals each one. LOVE IT, 2!

Peach Cobbler

3/4 cup flour
pinch salt
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup milk
2 tsp baking powder

1/2 cup butter
2 cups fruit
1 cup sugar

Sift flour, salt and baking powder.
Mix with 1 cup sugar and slowly stir in milk to make batter.
Melt butter in 8x8 baking dish.
Pour batter over butter.
DO NOT STIR.
Mix fruit and 1 cup sugar and spoon over batter.
Bake 1 hour at 350 degrees.
Serve hot or cold.

Have a safe happy fun fourth!

The Family Farm Tour stretched out over six counties but the ride through the mountains was part of the fun. Gorgeous. AND...at least ten degrees cooler than it was at home.

One of our first stops was in Barnardsville. Hawk and Ivy's organic garden was a beautiful mix of flowers, herbs, fruits and vegetables. The owner/gardener/artist/cook/bee-keeper is very active in the slow food movement and offers cooking and gardening classes at the B&B. They also host weddings and other special events on the property and in their terrific old tobacco barn.

So worth the trip and don't you know the breakfast part of this bed and breakfast must be healthy good and delicious?!

Can you see how many people there are at the downtown market?! The market has grown so much since my last visit. There were two entire blocks of Main Street full of fresh produce and people. Lovely. I bought my first local tomatoes of the season, silver queen corn, purple garlic AND an orchid. What a wonderful morning!

Also, thought you might be interested in the Family Farm Tour that's happening this weekend in western NC. It looks a lot like the upstate tour that we had a few weeks ago...only bigger.

The very first tomato in our garden.

Last year we had a row of zinnias and a few dill plants...this year the zinnias and dill reseeded ALL OVER the garden. It's not a neat and tidy garden because I just can't bear to pull up the happy flowers or the dill which also turns into a lovely flower.

Tomorrow morning we're going to the downtown market in Greenville. I'm hoping for some big RED tomatoes! We'll also be stopping by Mast General Store to see Lily Pottery's trunk show. LOVE her jewelry and wall pockets and magnets!

I did a lot of practicing for the cursive J necklace but it's nowhere near as dreamy as Jenna's calligraphy.

I'm always hopeful that something good will be in our huge mailbox and I love it when people use fun stamps. I know the forever stamps are the smart choice but they will never be my choice.

We went to the Barrioz Gardens and the Clemson University Student Organic Farm.

Clemson's CSA is definitely something to look into if you live anywhere near the campus! Their Campus Supported Agriculture is based on Community Supported Agriculture programs where a yearly fee gets you a box of produce each week. At Clemson, you receive whatever produce is in season that week PLUS herbs, zinnias, sunflowers AND free range eggs! They also have a farmer's market every Wednesday afternoon.

Maybe a Wednesday trip to the Botanical Garden AND the market???

Is it too early to be thinking of the weekend? No, I didn't think so, either. Especially when there are tough decisions to be made....goodness all around for this weekend.

The Upstate Farm Tour: It's a lot like Greenville's Open Studio Tour...It happens once a year, it's a self-guided tour, you won't have time for all of the locations and you are sure to be inspired by the farms you do visit!

The Indie Craft Experience: This is the first ICE show Wingo has missed in years but you don't have to miss it. It's a terrific show with loads of fun art and artists! This is the first TWO day ICE and is sure to be worth a trip to HOTlanta!

The Columbia Museum of Art: There is still a little bit of time to catch the Turner to Cezanne exhibit. I hear it is fabulous AND you don't have to get on a plane to see Monet's Waterlillies...just I-26 and you are there!

We had a few appointments in Asheville, NC and luckily happened upon the lovely Smith-McDowell Museum while we were in town. Don't you want to sit a spell in that little side room with all of the windows?!

On the way back home we took a slight detour by Carl Sandburg's home in Flat Rock, NC. I hear that Bob Dylan stood on that very same porch. Where, oh where, could I have heard that???

Both homes were already closed for the day. Looking forward to going INside next time!

Another fav of mine will be at Artisphere this weekend. In fact, Judy's "Tightrope Walker" was chosen as the official image of Artisphere 2009! Her work is fabulous from across the room but it gets even better (imagine!) when you see it up close. It's then that you can see the layers and layers of goodness that she includes in each piece! She paints, cuts, recycles, draws, tears and compiles images into the most wonderful collages! You can get a good close look at her work this weekend. Her booth will be near Falls Cottage on South Main.

Today I came home in the rain to finished gutters.
Before they could be installed, Mr. J (our super hero contractor) had to cut off some of the metal roof and replace the fascia board and trim.
Then the new wood had to be primed and painted and then....new gutters.

And yes, I know that back porch is u-g-l-y. It's on the list...just not anywhere near the top.

This brilliant spray paint hides the monster of a heater that lives on the other side of the windows. I like it because it screens the mess AND lets light shine through.
I spend hours on both sides of those windows and the frosted glass makes me happy....mostly because it lets me get away with less cleaning.
I just close the door and the monster mess disappears!

Making new enamel pendants for the Inman Park Festiva l this weekend. This festival is one of my favorite favs with a cra-ZEE parade on Saturday.
We will be right in the middle of the beautiful old neighborhood in Atlanta with lots and lots of fantastic art and people!

Soldering is a bit frustrating for me. I don't give my torch enough attention for it to love me like I want it to and sometimes he just won't cooperate. The good news is that Mr. Torch did me right this week and I have new silver pendants for tomorrow's show.

On her blog, Leslie describes herself as a secretary by day and snail mail art bandit by night. That girl is a little bandit! I can imagine her as a child coloring with orange and green crayons all over the page...nowhere close to inside the lines. She's likely to say or do most anything and it's that lively bold spirit that makes her so funny and her work so fantastic!

This girl has many gifts, one of which is being able to see the beauty in just about anything. She can spend hours (and I do mean HOURS) looking though a jar of old buttons and get genuinely excited to find three buttons that she likes. She appreciates the things that the rest of us rarely even notice and the way that she assembles these things in her art and life is really something lovely to see!

There is a small church at the end of our road. I walk there and back some afternoons. Oftentimes I'll take a bag and pick up the stray fake flowers that have blown into the woods from the cemetery. Once a year...I get to see this at the end of the road. Lovely.

Do you have house fairies???
You know, when you wake up and magically the dishes are done....and your sweet husband says, "Must have been the fairies."
Well this wonderful old house has lots of fairies. The busiest of the fairies is my adorable little Mom who has just finished the big staircase. We took up the grungy gold carpet and the thousands(!!!) of staples and icky mat that went with it. She then went on to putty and sand every hole and then paint the risers my favorite off white color and the treads a shiny grey. And if you know my Mom, you know that she used a tee-i-nee brush around each spindle and both colors have at least two coats.
I don't think you can tell from the photo but the colors are YUMMY!!!

This house has the best fairies....love them all!

We had planned on running in and saying hi to the FlatIron girls and then coming straight home because I am an early bird (not to be confused with a night owl in any way). But we wanted to see Teresa's Out of the Darkness paintings and meet Vernon...and then I spied the tree towel. Can you ever have too many hand towels?!?

So we were finally headed toward home when we noticed Suzanne Viti's studio was still open. Oh my! It was such a delight chatting with her and seeing all of the projects that she is working on. What a generous and oh so gifted girl! Love love love her tiles.

I am here to tell you, that area is overflowing with creative smart talented people. You can feel it when you are there...maybe it's contagious?! We can only hope!

Years ago I lived in Charlotte next door to one of my favorite people and in the same neighborhood as another fav. We call ourselves L, L and JL. This past weekend one of the L's and I went to Charleston to celebrate the other L's birthday. I made this "family necklace" for her birthday.

(It just so happens that the necklace could stand for Lorree, Laurie and Jimmie Lynn.)
It was a wonderful celebration with friends, family and....red velvet cake! The bday girl made sure I got the first (and biggest) piece of red velvet. Isn't she a dear friend?!

Thought I'd share some goodies that are going in the mail today to a very special little baby, Olive Marie! Can you believe that I didn't know her name was going to be Olive when I bought these super cute olive green gifts?! The baby booties were made by a friend and local (to me) artist. You can find her here. Wait until you see her adorable sweaters!! The very cool modern diaper changing kit was made by an Asheville artist and can be found here. You should read the description for the diaper kit...funny.

I like them because they are graphic and....I have a thing for fonts, letters, numbers, stencils and handwriting. Turns out there are other reasons to like a number necklace.
Some explanations that people have given me:
# of kids, # in family, lucky #, special dates or years, wife #3!, and my favorite was from a sweet couple at the ICE show who ordered a #1 because she was his number one girl!
(I wear a big blue 9....married in September)
